Grilling techniques and secrets: Insights from PICK Fresh Meat’s survey

As summer arrives, grilling comes alive in Hungarian gardens, terraces, and holiday homes. According to the latest survey conducted by Pick Fresh Meat, two-thirds of the Hungarian population regularly grills outdoors, highlighting the significance of family and friends gatherings. But why do we love grilling so much, and what are the main challenges we face?

Grilling habits

Among the respondents, nearly half (48%) grill only a few times a year. Additionally, 13% grill monthly, while 3% do so weekly. Interestingly, many don’t just grill in the summer; a third choose to utilize the opportunity regardless of the season as long as the weather permits.

Major challenges

Grilling isn’t always a straightforward joy. According to the respondents, the biggest challenge is the weather, specifically rain (54%). Moreover, poor-quality meat is also a common concern (39%), as well as meat that isn’t cooked properly. The summer heat (23%) can also contribute to grilling difficulties.

Tips to combat the heat

The preparedness of skilled grillers is not just about flavors. To make the heat more bearable, Hungarians employ creative solutions. Respondents report that 45% use ice cubes and refreshing drinks, 16% grill with a fan, while 14% opt to grill from the pool.

What do we grill?

The survey revealed that most people grill chicken (83%), pork (74%), and fish (18%). Men tend to grill pork more than their counterparts. The most preferred type is pork neck (80%), followed by ground meat (42%), loin (37%), and ribs (30%).

Awareness in the market

The research also highlighted that Hungarians are becoming increasingly conscious of their meat choices. During grilling parties, 76% of respondents claim to know where their food comes from, and one-third are willing to pay more for quality products. Székely Júlia, the strategic and marketing director of PICK Fresh Meat, emphasized that sourcing fresh meat from trustworthy origins is crucial for consumers.

Marinades and flavors

72% of respondents use their marinades to enhance the flavor of the meat. The most popular flavors include Mediterranean (63-64%) and traditional Hungarian spices (53%). Additionally, grilling is a creative activity where participants love experimenting with flavor variations. (RECEPTERDŐ)
